Best cPanel Alternatives in 2026: 9 Control Panels Compared

There is no single best cPanel alternative in 2026: the right one depends on how many sites you host, whether you need mail on the server, whether you resell hosting, and which OS you want to run. For a mature commercial panel with Apache, look at DirectAdmin or Plesk; for the lowest cost at scale, Enhance or Webuzo; for free software, HestiaCP, CloudPanel, CyberPanel or ISPConfig. Below you'll find verified prices, the technical differences and who each panel suits, Koapanel included, limits and all.

Why people are leaving cPanel

cPanel is priced per account and the list price goes up every year. The 2026 licences (monthly, before tax):

cPanel licence Accounts included Monthly price
Solo 1 $29.99
Admin up to 5 $35.99
Pro up to 30 $53.99
Premier up to 100 $69.99 + $0.49 per account over 100

Sources: webhosting.today on the 2026 cPanel price list and cPanel's pricing page (annual billing takes roughly 8% off, except on Premier). For the full story, read our guide to the cPanel price increase in 2026.

For an agency with 15 to 30 sites on a VPS, that is over $50 a month in licensing alone, often more than the VPS itself. No wonder so many are shopping around.

Five questions to answer first

  1. How many sites or accounts per server? Some panels charge per account (cPanel, Webuzo), some per domain (Plesk), per site across your whole fleet (Enhance) or per server (Koapanel, DirectAdmin Standard).
  2. Do you need mail on the server? CloudPanel has none; the others do, with different stacks.
  3. Do you resell hosting? You need admin / reseller / user levels and white-label branding.
  4. Which OS and web server? Apache with .htaccess, nginx or LiteSpeed: this decides how painful migrating existing sites will be.
  5. How much command-line work are you willing to do? Free panels often leave more of the mail setup and upgrades to you.

The panels one by one

Plesk

cPanel's long-standing rival. It is the only panel here that also runs on Windows Server, and it has a large extension catalogue, WordPress Toolkit, Git and Docker. Pricing follows the number of domains: 10 on Web Admin, 30 on Web Pro, unlimited on Web Host, which is also the edition for resellers.

Best for: Windows/.NET sites, and teams that want a mature product with lots of integrations and commercial support. Where it beats Koapanel: OS choice, extensions, Apache with .htaccess, years of market presence. See our detailed Koapanel vs Plesk comparison.

DirectAdmin

Lightweight and stable, with the same three levels (admin, reseller, user) as WHM. The Standard licence at $29 a month has no account or domain limits, with automatic volume discounts on multiple licences. It supports many web servers, LiteSpeed and OpenLiteSpeed included.

Best for: hosts and resellers who want a cPanel-like experience at a predictable cost. Where it wins: web server and OS choice, a mature plugin ecosystem. Note that the $5 Personal Plus licence is capped at 2 accounts with forum-only support.

Enhance

A modern panel on Ubuntu 24.04 with containerised sites, PowerDNS, incremental backups, staging and a multi-server cluster managed from one install. You pay per hosted site across all servers, with a $10 monthly minimum; addon domains and staging copies are free.

Best for: hosting companies running many servers as one platform. Where it beats Koapanel: multi-server management, four web servers to choose from, and a lower price in the middle band (30 to 60 sites on one server cost $10 a month versus €14.90 to €24.90 for Koapanel). Support is in English.

Webuzo

From the Softaculous team: the cheapest of the paid panels, with a cPanel-like interface, three account levels, Softaculous one-click installs and on-the-fly web server switching. Priced per account.

Best for: anyone who wants a cPanel-style experience for very little money. Where it wins: price on servers with few accounts, app catalogue.

HestiaCP

Free (GPLv3) with web, mail, DNS and databases on a single server. By default nginx sits in front of Apache, so .htaccess files work. There is no built-in reseller level.

Best for: people hosting their own sites or a handful of clients who prefer free software. Where it wins: zero cost, Apache support, Debian and several Ubuntu releases.

CloudPanel

Free, nginx-based, fast and clean. Beyond PHP it handles Node.js, Python and reverse proxies. It deliberately ships without mail: the documentation points you to an external provider.

Best for: developers hosting their own apps with mail handled elsewhere. It isn't built for reselling hosting.

CyberPanel

Free, built around OpenLiteSpeed and its WordPress cache. It includes mail, PowerDNS and a reseller area. LiteSpeed Enterprise and some add-ons cost extra. Ubuntu 24.04 support arrived in version 2.4.4 (September 2025).

Best for: anyone who wants LiteSpeed without paying for the panel.

ISPConfig

Free, mature, able to manage several servers (web, mail and DNS on separate machines) from one panel, with three access levels. The interface is dated and installation takes more know-how.

Best for: experienced sysadmins who want a distributed setup with no licence fees.

Koapanel

This is our panel, so here it is with its boundaries. It runs on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS only, with nginx, multiple PHP-FPM versions (one per site) and MariaDB. Mail is an optional module (Postfix, Dovecot, Rspamd with DKIM signing, Roundcube and SnappyMail webmail); DNS can live on the server (PowerDNS with DNSSEC and branded reseller nameservers) or on Cloudflare. It has restic backups to S3 or disk, antimalware including real-time protection, a WordPress section with three cache layers and updates with automatic rollback, and admin / reseller / user levels with reseller branding. Every feature is in every plan.

Pricing is per server, not per account: free up to 3 sites for personal use, then €7.90 (10 sites), €14.90 (30) and €24.90 (unlimited sites) a month, before VAT. See pricing or run the numbers in the savings calculator. Migration from cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin or plain Linux works from a backup file or over SSH; from a full cPanel backup, mailboxes arrive with their messages and original passwords.

Where the others are better: Koapanel has no Apache or .htaccess support, no LiteSpeed or CloudLinux, no classic FTP (SFTP only), no WordPress multisite, and a single supported OS. It is young next to cPanel, Plesk or DirectAdmin, and it doesn't run a fleet of servers as one cluster the way Enhance does.

Best for: agencies and freelancers with PHP and WordPress sites on a VPS who want a flat price per server; hosting providers looking for wholesale licences.

Which one should you pick?

  • Lots of sites with complex .htaccess rules, or you rely on CloudLinux: stay on cPanel or move to DirectAdmin or Plesk.
  • Windows/.NET sites: Plesk.
  • A provider with dozens of servers: Enhance or ISPConfig for central management; DirectAdmin for a WHM-style model.
  • Zero budget and comfortable on the command line: HestiaCP (with mail) or CloudPanel (no mail, but Node.js and Python).
  • LiteSpeed for free: CyberPanel.
  • An agency with WordPress sites on Ubuntu, mail included, reselling under your own brand: Koapanel. The head-to-head is on Koapanel vs cPanel.

Whichever panel you choose, test a migration on a spare VPS before moving clients: that's where Apache-versus-nginx differences show up. Our guide on how to migrate from cPanel walks through it without downtime.

FAQ

What is the best free cPanel alternative?

It depends on mail. HestiaCP is the most complete (web, mail, DNS) on a single server; CloudPanel is the fastest but has no mail; ISPConfig manages multiple servers. Koapanel is free for up to 3 personal sites.

Can I move off cPanel without losing email?

Yes, with most panels, though results vary. With Koapanel, from a full cPanel backup or over SSH as root, mailboxes arrive with their messages and original passwords. Otherwise, an IMAP copy does the job.

Is there a cPanel alternative with a flat price per server?

Yes: DirectAdmin Standard ($29/month, unlimited accounts) and Koapanel Agency (€24.90/month, unlimited sites). Enhance charges per site, Plesk by domain count.

Which cPanel alternatives support .htaccess?

Plesk, DirectAdmin, HestiaCP, ISPConfig, Webuzo and Enhance can all run Apache. CyberPanel on OpenLiteSpeed reads a subset of .htaccess rewrite rules. CloudPanel and Koapanel use nginx only.
